The wind comes down the Bow Valley harder here than anywhere else we work. We fasten roofs for it and quote hillside lots honestly, with every number in writing.
Built for the wind
Cochrane sits where the Bow Valley opens onto the prairie, and the valley acts like a funnel. Of the five areas we serve, this town takes the most sustained wind. Once a sealant bond breaks, gusts keep working the shingle until it creases or leaves the roof.
Manufacturers publish a high-wind nailing pattern, and in Cochrane we quote it as the default: six nails per shingle, driven on the nail line, not above it. A few dollars in fasteners, and the roof holds when a hard blow rolls down the valley.
Gusts pry at a roof from the rakes and eaves first. We run proper starter strip on both edges and hand-seal the perimeter courses so nothing is left loose to pry on.
Already losing tabs? That is the most common call we take from Cochrane. We replace the creased shingles and re-seal around the repair. If every slope is lifting, the fastening was the problem from day one, and we will say so.
Hail does not skip Cochrane. If a storm leaves bruising across your slopes, we are HAAG-certified to document it and will tell you whether it is a repair or a claim.
Hillside lots
A lot of this town is built on the hill. GlenEagles, Sunset Ridge, the streets that terrace down toward the Bow.
The views are why people move there. The roofs are the least forgiving ones we work on: steep pitches, walkout backs that put the eave three storeys up, nowhere flat to stage material. That changes what a roof costs to build safely, and we price it on day one instead of partway through.

The local record
Less hail than the east side of Calgary. Far more wind. The roof has to be built for the second one.
Wind and storm records are Environment Canada's; hail-loss figures are industry-reported insured losses (Insurance Bureau of Canada and CatIQ estimates).
GlenEagles dates from the 1990s, so original roofs there are at replacement age, and the steep pitches make it the priciest re-roof in town per square.
Sunset Ridge, Fireside and Heartland are mostly 2010s and 2020s builds on first roofs. The question there is whether the builder's fastening was the high-wind pattern, and a roof inspection answers it before the first tab lifts.
The older streets east of downtown, around Cochrane Heights and the East End, mix eras, so the quote starts with a look at what is on the roof now.

We quote Cochrane the same way we quote Calgary. Grouping our visits into blocks keeps the drive out of anyone’s price, and the number you get in writing has nothing padded in for the trip.
That edge faces the prevailing wind and its sealant bonds have broken. Re-sealing the loose courses fixes it for a while, but if the same edge lifts every season the fastening underneath needs correcting. We check that before quoting the same repair twice.

Less than the east side of Calgary, but yes. The town sits west of the main hail track, so the big 2020 and 2024 storms largely missed it, and most Cochrane calls are wind repairs rather than hail. When a cell does come through, we are HAAG-certified to document what it did.
Environment Canada wind warnings for Cochrane are routine, usually for chinook gusts of 90 to 100 km/h down the Bow Valley. A 2021 chinook pushed gusts as high as 160 km/h through parts of southern Alberta. That is why six nails on the line and hand-sealed edges are our default here, not an upgrade.
